Elks host VFW essay winner
July 10th St. Helens Elks Lodge hosted Veterans of Foreign Wars, Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest Award presentation for Maria Burns of Columbia City. Maria is the winning recipient for Oregon’s Veterans of Foreign Wars annual essay contest. Carl Anderson, Patriot’s Pen Oregon Chairperson and VFW Lifetime member presented to Maria an official certificate and a $500 check for her 2016 – 2017 essay. Maria’s essays have won her local, district and state level contests for sixth through eighth graders, earning her $2,500 over the last year.
