Brothers in Arms: Clatskanie veterans clean memorial honoring local heroes

Memorial Day has always meant something to Gerry Simmons.

“Seeing the number of veterans that we have … It really brings it home,” said Simmons, who served in the Vietnam War and is now commander of Clatskanie American Legion Post 68.

Simmons, like many area veterans, continues to seek out ways that he can honor and remember others who served. He was with nearly a dozen other fellow officers from the Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars for the annual Clatskanie Veterans Monument cleaning Tuesday morning.
